Wedding Photography and Videography: Do You Really Need Both?

When you’re planning a wedding, there are so many things to think about.

The venue, the dress, the flowers, the food, the music, the guest list… and somewhere in the middle of all of that, you need to decide how you want to remember the day afterwards.

Wedding photography? Videography? Both?

It’s a question we hear quite often.

And honestly, there isn’t one right answer for every couple. But after many years of photographing weddings in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands, we’ve found that photography and videography each bring something different to your wedding memories.

And when they’re done well, they work beautifully together.

1. Photography and Videography Capture Different Parts of Your Story

Your wedding photographs give you those moments you can stop and look at properly.

The expression on your partner’s face when you walk down the aisle. Your mom seeing you in your dress for the first time. Your friends laughing during the reception. The two of you together during your couple portraits.

A photograph captures that one moment beautifully.

Video gives you something that a photograph can’t: movement and sound.

You can hear your vows again. Hear your dad’s speech. Hear everyone cheering when you enter the reception. See the way you moved together during your first dance.

That’s probably the biggest reason I love having both. They’re not really competing with each other — they’re preserving different parts of the same day.

2. Why We Love Cinematic Wedding Films

Since we’ve started offering videography as part of some of our wedding collections, I’ve become a little obsessed with it!

There is something incredibly special about watching a beautifully edited cinematic wedding film a few years after your wedding.

We can incorporate music that is meaningful to you and bring together all those little pieces of the day — getting ready, the ceremony, your portraits, the reception, speeches and dancing — into a film that tells the story of your wedding.

And it’s not about having hours and hours of footage.

A well-made wedding highlights film can be much more meaningful than simply having a camera recording everything from beginning to end.

3. You Can Also Have Short Wedding Videos for Social Media

This is another little addition that I really love.

Alongside a longer cinematic highlights film, some of our collections include shorter wedding video clips that are perfect for sharing on Instagram and social media.

For example, you might have a beautiful little clip from your ceremony, reception or first dance.

They’re short, easy to share and something you’ll probably actually use.

And I think there’s something lovely about being able to share a little piece of your wedding day while everything is still fresh and exciting — especially with friends and family who couldn’t be there.

4. The Advantage of a Husband-and-Wife Photography Team

This is one of the things that makes working with Emil particularly special.

Because we’re a husband-and-wife team, we’re already used to working together and knowing where the other person needs to be.

I’ll usually go through to the bride while Emil goes to the groom. I can photograph the bridal preparations while he captures the groom and his groomsmen getting ready.

Then, when it’s time to leave for the ceremony, I’ll often travel with the bride and bridesmaids while Emil goes with the groom and groomsmen.

That also means he can capture those lovely, natural moments of the guests arriving and mingling before the ceremony begins.

Then we meet up again at the ceremony and continue working together throughout the day.

Because we’re already there as a team, we can also capture video alongside the photography without adding another whole team of people to your wedding day.

5. Natural and Candid Photography Matters

This is something I feel quite strongly about.

Of course, we’ll give you direction when you need it. Your couple portraits, family photographs and bridal party photos all need a little bit of organisation.

But we don’t want you spending your entire wedding day being told where to stand and what to do.

Some of the best photographs happen when you’re not thinking about the camera at all.

That’s why our style is very much a combination of natural, candid moments and beautifully guided portraits.

We’ll make sure we get the photographs you want, but we’ll also leave plenty of space for you to enjoy your actual wedding.

Go and talk to your friends. Have a drink. Eat your canapés. Dance. Laugh.

We’ll be there.

6. What to Look for in a Wedding Photographer

There are so many talented wedding photographers in Cape Town that choosing one can feel overwhelming.

My advice is to look beyond the Instagram highlights.

When comparing photographers, look for:

Full wedding galleries rather than just a selection of favourite images
Consistency across different lighting and locations
A good balance of candid moments and beautiful portraits
Natural-looking photographs that don’t feel overly staged
Experience photographing receptions, speeches and darker venues
A style that you genuinely love
A beautiful portfolio image is lovely, but your wedding isn’t one photograph.

It’s an entire story.

You want a Cape Town wedding photographer who can tell that story from beginning to end.

7. If You’re Considering Videography, Look at the Whole Film

The same principle applies when choosing a wedding videographer.

Don’t only watch the beautiful 60-second highlight reel.

If possible, ask to see a longer wedding film and pay attention to:

How the ceremony is captured
The quality of the speeches and vows
The natural moments with family and friends
The way the music works with the story
Whether the film feels emotional and authentic rather than overly staged

A cinematic wedding film doesn’t need to feel like a music video to be beautiful.

For us, the best wedding videography is about capturing the atmosphere of the day and the little moments that you might otherwise forget.

8. Cape Town and the Cape Winelands Give Us So Much to Work With

One of the reasons we love photographing weddings in Cape Town is the incredible variety of locations.

From city weddings and beautiful coastal celebrations to the vineyards and mountains of the Cape Winelands, every venue has its own character.

We photograph weddings throughout Cape Town as well as areas such as Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, and knowing the area makes a real difference.

The light can change quickly, particularly later in the afternoon, and knowing when to take you outside for your couple photographs can make a huge difference to the final images.

Your location becomes part of your story, too.

9. So, Do You Really Need Both?

Honestly? No.

If you only want wedding photography, that’s absolutely fine. Beautiful photographs will give you something you’ll treasure for years.

But if you love the idea of being able to hear the voices, see the movement and relive parts of your wedding day, I really do think videography is worth considering.

Your wedding film is something you can sit down and watch and suddenly hear everyone’s voices again.

I think both are incredibly special in their own way.
